We transformed our kitchen with a budget of just €1262, achieving a fresh, modern look without a full renovation. By carefully selecting materials and DIYing key steps, we created a stunning kitchen makeover at a fraction of the cost.

Before

Materials Needed

  • MDF board (18mm thick) for the new countertop
  • Water-repellent paint
  • Sandpaper and degreaser
  • Wrap foil for kitchen top
  • Ikea Havstorp fronts
  • Black multiplex hardwood for high cabinets and side panels
  • New sink
  • Black paint
  • Handles for cabinets
  • Backsplash thin hardwood (6mm thick)
  • Basic tools: saw, drill, screws, paintbrushes, and adhesive

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Remove Old Countertop

We began by removing the existing countertop to make way for the new one. Taking care to avoid damaging the surrounding kitchen elements, we carefully detached the surface and prepared for installation.

Step 2: Place New Countertop

Using an 18mm thick MDF board, we measured and cut it to size before securing it in place. MDF provides a solid and cost-effective option for a sleek, modern kitchen upgrade.

Step 3: Apply Water-Repellent Paint

To ensure longevity and durability, we coated the MDF countertop with a water-repellent paint. This step is essential to protect against moisture and daily wear and tear.

Step 4: Sand and Degrease MDF

Before wrapping, we sanded the surface to create a smooth finish, then degreased it thoroughly to allow the wrap foil to adhere properly.

Step 5: Wrap Kitchen Top

Using high-quality wrap foil, we carefully applied it to the MDF surface to achieve a sleek and polished appearance. This is a cost-effective way to mimic expensive countertops.

Step 6: Mount New Kitchen Fronts

For a fresh look, we replaced the old cabinet fronts with multiplex hardwood (12mm thick). Using the original doors as templates, we ensured that the hinges were mounted in the same place for a perfect fit.

Step 7: Upgrade High Cabinets

We added black multiplex hardwood to the high cabinets, including a matching side panel. This provided a striking contrast and modernized the kitchen aesthetic.

Step 8: Install New Sink

A brand-new sink was installed to complete the countertop upgrade, adding both functionality and style to the kitchen.

Step 9: Paint and Finish

Once everything was in place, we painted the kitchen fronts in our desired color to complete the transformation. Black paint was used for a sophisticated and contemporary look.

By strategically selecting budget-friendly materials and opting for DIY techniques, we achieved a beautiful kitchen renovation for just €1262. From wrapping the kitchen top to upgrading cabinets with multiplex hardwood, every step contributed to a stylish, modern space.

Whether you're on a tight budget or just love a good DIY project, this approach proves that stunning results don’t have to come with a hefty price tag.
