After transforming our bathroom with a deep, moody paint color, the space exuded high-end elegance—except for the stark white plastic switch plates and outlet covers that stood out in the worst way. I searched for stylish gold alternatives but found them to be surprisingly expensive.
With our DIY budget already maxed out, I remembered a small tube of gold leaf Rub 'n Buff® in my craft kit and decided to give it a try. The result? A stunning, budget-friendly upgrade that cost less than $10! Here's how I did it step by step.
Materials Needed
- Light switch plates and outlet covers
- Sanding block
- Soft cloth or old sock
- Small clean brush
- Rub 'n Buff® (Gold Leaf or preferred shade)
Step 1: Prepare the Surface
Before applying Rub 'n Buff®, I used a small sanding block to lightly roughen up the plastic switch plates. This helps the product adhere better for longer-lasting results. After sanding, I wiped them thoroughly to remove any dust, grit, or oils.
Step 2: Apply Rub 'n Buff®
Using a small clean brush, I applied a tiny amount—no more than a pea-sized dab—of Rub 'n Buff® to the surface. A little goes a long way, so applying too much can result in a streaky finish. I spread the product evenly, ensuring full coverage.
Once coated, I set the switch plates aside to dry. Although Rub 'n Buff® dries relatively quickly (in about an hour), leaving them overnight ensures a fully set finish.
Step 3: Buff for Shine
To bring out the metallic sheen, I used a soft cloth (an old sock works great) and buffed in circular motions. The more you buff, the shinier the finish will become. If any areas looked uneven, I simply applied another thin coat and repeated the process.
Some DIYers recommend applying a clear sealant for added durability, but I opted to skip this step since Rub 'n Buff® is naturally water-resistant. So far, the finish has held up beautifully!
This easy DIY project transformed my ordinary white switch plates into elegant gold accents that perfectly complement my bathroom's aesthetic.
With just a small tube of Rub 'n Buff®, I created high-end-looking hardware for under $10! The best part? This product works on plastic, metal, wood, ceramic, glass, and more—making it an affordable and versatile tool for future home decor upgrades.
Let me know if you have any questions, and happy DIY-ing!
