Archways are currently trending in home design, and we expect them to continue for well into 2025. Adding an arch doorway is a beautiful way to add to your home's character.
While the process may sound daunting, it's manageable with the right tools and steps. Here's a simple guide to help you transform your space with an archway.
Materials and Tools You’ll Need
Materials:
- Arch kit (custom-made to your doorway dimensions)
- Sheetrock (flexible drywall or standard drywall with kerf cuts)
- Joint compound (mud) and drywall tape
- Primer and paint
Tools:
- Pry bar and utility knife
- Screwdriver or power drill
- Drywall screws
- Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
- Measuring tape
- Level
- Mud pan and drywall knife
Step 1: Remove the Existing Doorway and Trim
Start by removing the old door, trim, and any casing around the doorway. Use a pry bar and utility knife to avoid damaging the surrounding walls. You want to create a clean opening for your new arch.
Step 2: Measure and Order Your Arch Kit
We used a kit from Archways and Ceilings, which made the process much easier. Take accurate measurements of your doorway height, width, and depth, and send them to the company. They'll ship you a kit tailored to the measurements you supply.
Step 3: Assemble and Install the Arch
Follow the kit instructions to assemble the arch components. Secure the arch frame in place using screws or nails, ensuring it's level and flush with the wall studs. Double-check the alignment to avoid uneven results.

Step 4: Add Sheetrock
Remove the flexible drywall and use a power drywall cutout saw for your drywall cuts. They are less expensive than you might think. Consider using flexible corner bead tape for a seamless finish. Cut pieces of sheetrock to fit the new arch and secure them with drywall screws. This step can be tricky, especially on the curved section of the arch.
Step 5: Apply Joint Compound
Smooth out the seams with joint compound (mud) and tape. Take your time to sand between coats to create a seamless, bump-free surface. A professional touch can make a huge difference here.
Step 6: Prime and Paint
Once the surface is smooth and dry, apply primer and paint. Choose a color that complements your space for a polished finish.
After
By following these steps, you’ll have an elegant arched doorway that adds charm and character to your home. Enjoy the transformation!
