The meter cupboard is a necessity in every home, yet rarely a visual delight. That extra door in your hallway? It can disrupt the flow and charm of your interior. Why not turn it into a hidden feature, seamlessly blending with your home’s design and creating a warm, inviting first impression? Here's how we tackled this simple yet transformative project.
Material
- Acoustic panels
- Mounting adhesive
- Stanley knife
- Saw
- Tape measure
- Spacers
- Paint
Step-by-step
1. Plan and Measure
First impressions count, so take your time to plan. Start by measuring the door and surrounding wall to ensure you buy the right amount of acoustic panels. Want a flawless look? Adjust the layout to finish on a full panel or align the seams with the door height for a purposeful aesthetic.

Before
2. Cutting and Prepping the Panels
Using a saw, cut the panels to size and sand the edges for a smooth finish. If your panels don’t cover the door’s or ceiling’s height, embrace it! Create small gaps between panels and paint the exposed areas black for a chic, intentional design.
3. Mounting the Panels
Apply mounting adhesive to the back of each panel and press it onto the surface, starting from the bottom. For the door, use spacers to keep the panels slightly raised, ensuring the door can still swing open super easily.
4. Handling the Hinges
This step requires precision. You can leave the hinges visible, recess them into the felt, or switch to concealed hinges. We opted to hide them within the black felt. A quick coat of black paint on the stainless-steel hinges ensured they disappeared seamlessly into the design.
5. Finishing Touches
Check the door’s movement once the adhesive dries. If it doesn’t close flush, a magnetic strip can help. To keep the look clean and minimal. We skipped a handle and instead, we just use one of the wooden slats to pull the door open.

The result? A stunning accent wall that doubles as a clever disguise for the meter cupboard. In just a few hours, we turned a functional necessity into a stylish feature that elevates our hallway's overall vibe.

Now, go ahead and transform your own meter cupboard—it’s easier than you think!
