Adding a faux beam doorway is a simple yet impactful way to bring character to your home. Using pine hardwood and a few essential tools, you can achieve a rustic, high-end look at a fraction of the cost.
Before
Supplies Needed
- 3x Pine hardwood (1x6x8)
- 4x Pine hardwood (1x4x8)
- Brad nails & nail gun
- Wood filler
- 80-120 grit sandpaper
- Stain: Minwax Special Walnut
- Optional: Poly water-based top coat or clear wax
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Prepare the Doorway
Before starting, we removed the existing pocket door and all trim. If your doorway does not have a pocket door, you can skip this step. To provide a solid base for the faux beam, we added a 2x4 on the side of the pocket door frame to fasten the hardwood securely.
Step 2: Attach the Center Pieces
We began by installing the center pieces of the beam, starting with the top board first, followed by the side panels. Ensuring a snug fit at this stage is essential for a seamless finish.
Step 3: Add the Trim Boards
To enhance the illusion of a substantial overhead beam, we added a trim board on the exterior of the doorway. The side trim boards were cut to 3 inches wide, while the top trim board was 5 ½ inches wide. This subtle size difference creates the effect of a more prominent top beam.
Step 4: Fill and Sand
Once all the trim pieces were in place, we filled nail holes and any gaps with wood filler. After allowing the filler to dry, we sanded the entire beam using 80-120 grit sandpaper for a smooth, polished surface.
Step 5: Stain and Seal
For a rich, warm finish, we applied two coats of Minwax Special Walnut stain. To protect the wood and enhance durability, you can seal the beam with a poly water-based top coat or clear wax.
This DIY faux beam doorway is a fantastic way to add warmth and architectural interest to your home. With minimal materials and effort, you can create a custom rustic feature that blends seamlessly with your decor.
