A green sofa has been on my wish list for many years, so when we moved house and started a new project, I knew this was the perfect time to get one. Transforming our living room from a bland magnolia white box into a cozy, stylish haven was a dream come true. Here’s how we did it!

Materials You'll Need:

  • Filler and sandpaper
  • Sugar soap
  • Plain white paint for a mist coat
  • Rust-Oleum paint in Melrose and Siena
  • Paint brushes and rollers
  • Chunky shelf
  • Plants and artwork
  • Throws and cushions
  • Custom-made green velvet sofa (ours is the "Belle" sofa)

Step-by-Step Guide:

Step 1: Prep the Room

First, we filled and sanded any imperfections on the walls. We also sanded the skirting boards to ensure a smooth surface. After sanding, we cleaned the walls and skirting boards with sugar soap to remove any dust and grime. Then, we applied a mist coat of plain white paint to create a fresh base for our new colors.

Step 2: Choose and Apply Paint Colors

We collaborated with Rust-Oleum for our paint choices and settled on Melrose for the walls and ceilings. This beautiful pale pink with orange undertones was perfect for our north-facing room, adding warmth and brightness. For the doors and skirtings, we chose Siena, a classic terracotta that provided a striking contrast. It only took two coats of each paint to achieve a rich, vibrant look.

Step 3: Add Functional and Decorative Elements

To draw additional interest and functionality to the room, we installed a chunky shelf at eye level. This shelf is perfect for displaying our favorite plants and artwork, adding both greenery and personality to the space.

Step 4: Incorporate Textiles for Coziness

To enhance the cozy feel, we added soft throws and cushions. These not only provide comfort but also tie the room together, complementing the new color scheme.

Step 5: The Star of the Show - Our Green Sofa

Our “Belle” sofa was custom-made to fit a specific corner of our living room, as we have an ongoing project on the main wall. We chose a gorgeous green velvet fabric that truly pops against the pale pink and terracotta paint. This sofa has quickly become a favorite spot for lounging and napping, blending comfort with style perfectly.

💡
When buying a coloured sofa, consider its versatility to ensure it complements any future decor changes. Ensure the size allows for easy mobility within the room, facilitating layout rearrangements.

Updating our living room with a custom green sofa and complementary colors has been a delightful project. The transformation is not just visually pleasing but also incredibly functional and cozy. Whether you’re thinking of a small refresh or a major overhaul, embracing color and thoughtful design choices can make a huge difference.

Happy decorating!
